If you haven’t noticed, I am on a bit of a CL hunt. I really miss having the visceral experience that a classic car brings you. No ABS, no T/C, etc. Just you, the car, and the road. As much as I love my GTO, she can become boring sometimes because she is expensive and harder to work on and there is a little disconnect from the world inside her. Plus I DD her and I think that ruins some of the special feeling you get. Well good running cars I like are hard to find in any sort of price range, not that I have one anymore. I’ve spent all my money on my GTO. But I was looking at 6 cylinder Mustangs because you can get a decent one for cheap.

Look, paint!
It is fairly clean from what I can tell and would be a fun drive! But what if a V8 pulls up to you at a light? You’d be so embarrassed. So? Who cares? It is still a great car. “But come on, just get a V8 model.”

Look no paint
The problem here is the V8s go up in price so quickly. Even the ones that didn’t come from the factory with a V8. That is $5500 difference for a car that looks to be in worse condition.
I mean if you HAD to have a V8, which lets be honest I would get bored of the I6 after a while, and you can get a decent new V8 for cheaper than that. Hell if you’re really pinching pennies a used one would be even better.
ATK High Performance 1968-74 Ford 302 Stock Drop In Crate Engines HP99F
That engine would cost you roughly $3000 and with the few odds and ends needed to get it running in you I6 car, you could be out less money than buying a rough V8 model. And the wild thing it you could sell it more than that V8 model when you’re done.
Stupid classic cars. I would enjoy and early I6 Mustang though.... Hmmm

I would put downdraft carbs on the 6cyl ‘Stang, I’d rather have a Chevy though

I’d only want a Corvette, Camaro, or Nova and those cost too much, and if I was going to get a Camaro then I would very much rather have a Firebird.

LOL. A little in the opposite direction. No driver assistance, but also little tactile feedback in a lot of cases. It’s not helping you, it’s actually holding you back.

And this is how I ended up with the Cougar... an equivalent Cougar (which only came with V8s) is significantly cheaper than a V8 Mustang ($3k for mine). I still prefer Mustangs, but the Cougar has grown on me enough that I plan on keeping it quite a while, unless some smoking deal pops up on a fastback Mustang.
Swapping a V8 in 6 cylinder car can be a pain, based on my research. Not just a drop in. I liked my 6 cylinder Mustang though. It was a fun little cruiser!

The 6 is gutless.

If you want to really feel it, get a 70s-80s european roadster, not some clapped out muscle car without the muscle. Alfa spiders and Triumphs can be had CHEAP.

that particular family of I6s had an integral intake manifold, it was part of the cylinder head casting. there’s no way to find joy with any of them.

What about a Falcon? You could get a well-sorted one with a 289 the price of that ratty V8 Mustang.

so upgrade the head to the head off of a 250 ci, with the non integrated intake. they fit, and then you have aftermarket options for intakes and carbs. one of the limiting items on them as you know are the intakes, but once you get past that, they can be made to run fairly decent.

yes, but the inline 6 makes such wonderful low range torque, that you could set the car up to take advantage of it coming out of the corners. it falls off in the mid range rpms, when you run out of gear. but since the inline cars are so much cheaper, why not do SOMETHING with the engine other than just throw it down on the ground?

upper rpms yes. low range torque not so much. they have all kinds of low rpm grunt pull up to the 2800 range...... swap the head for a non integrated 250 item, and get a better intake to help it breathe.

You have a beautiful Cougar.
I know it is a bit of a pain, but still makes more sense to me than buying a v8 car at the moment.

I wish I liked Wagons. There are so many cool one around here.
Bugs are neat, but I just can’t get myself to get a large bubble 911.
Also I need a a running car unfortunately.
Thank you for looking. Though it isn’t helping me save money.

Oh, I’ll be honest, I’d trade my Cougar for my old Mustang, even though my Mustang was a 6 cyl. When I was looking in summer 2015, even the 6 cyl cars I was finding were rougher than what I was looking for. I had a small window of opportunity when I was project car shopping, though. I knew approval from my wife was probably valid for about a week until the offer was rescinded! Ha!

Ha! I would much rather have the Cougar than a Mustang. But then I am not really a Ford guy so the Cougar is a little bit more forgivable.

Ha! My wife and I both had ‘67 Mustangs in our youth. She thinks the Cougar is “ok” but would really prefer a Mustang. I’m a little self serving in thinking that the allowed Mustang restoration budget would exceed what I’ve been given for the Cougar. Now that I have the Cougar, I’m not letting it go.

i love the v8, dont misunderstand me. sbc in particular. and ford right after it. (high strung stuff) i have this friend though, older guy, and he has a lot of old heavy equipment. most, if not all of it, use some variant of inline 6. i have gotten to see them do some impressive work. they lug down to idle, and just keep chugging along loaded.
previously i wouldnt have looked at one twice. after watching them work, they have grown on me.
race car, sure,v8 especially if you want it to be competitive. but just tooling around, the inline feels like you are driving it at its limit, what with its clattering lifters and rockers.
